Nigeria is missing out on nanotechnology opportunities
In the absence of state budget allocations and a national policy on nanotechnology research, Nigeria is missing out on the potential benefits of this burgeoning field, according to a new study. A study published on 29 March in the South African Journal of Science suggests that Nigeria’s engagement with nanotechnology is limited to research at some universities and occasional conferences and is further hindered by a lack of advanced equipment to study nanomaterials. According to the study, ‘Rusty gold in Nigeria: Untapped advances in nanotechnology’, research groups at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, take the lead, having organised four and five conferences respectively. These two institutions are the major contributors to knowledge in nanotechnology research among public-funded universities in Nigeria. The study was compiled by Agbaje Lateef, professor of microbiology and head of the nanotechnology research group at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. He defines nanotechnology as the study of the fabrication and application of materials and nanomaterials that occur naturally or can be created with scientific techniques.Latest News
